Shipping Containers
Repurposing of shipping containers (or “sea cans”) for uses other than shipping or storage of freight is becoming increasingly more common. When used to support or shelter any use or occupancy and placed on a property (whether temporarily or permanently), a shipping container is considered a building and must comply with applicable legislation.

Decks and Accessory Buildings
Summer is the prime season for permit applications for decks and accessory buildings (sheds and garages) over 10 m2 (approx. 107 ft2).
To ensure timely review and approval, permit applications should include all relevant information such as plans, structure and framing details, etc.
As per The Construction Codes Act, local authorities may appoint a building official licensed by the province to assist in the review and enforcement of construction standards related to these structures.
The permitting and inspection process assures local authorities and owners that buildings and structures are built to the minimum standards outlined in the National Building Code of Canada.

Fall 2026 Legislative Framework Training Workshop in Regina
The objective of the Legislative Framework Training (LFT) workshop is to provide a better understanding of Saskatchewan’s construction legislation and regulations for the successful application of the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) 2020 and the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings 2020. The LFT workshop is open to a broad range of stakeholders at no cost. Workshop topics include:
- NBC 2020, Division A, Part 2 – Objectives
- NBC 2020, Division A, Part 3 – Functional Statements
- NBC 2020, Division C – Administrative Provisions
- The Administrative Requirements for Use with the National Building Code of Canada, 1985
- The Construction Codes Act
- The Building Code Regulations
- The Energy Code Regulations
- Building Bylaw and Enforcement Guide complete with Model Building Bylaw
- Alternative Solutions

Building and Technical Standards Fall 2026 ½ Day Workshop – Virtual
BTS is pleased to offer a half-day virtual workshop on the following four topics:
- Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation: A Deep Dive into Canada’s Housing Design Catalogue
- Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan: The National Plumbing Code of Canada and the Inspection Process
- Radon Gas: Awareness and Regulatory Compliance
- Building and Technical Standards: 2026-27 Mid-Year Update
The purpose of the workshop is to review and provide practical examples of construction standards and how they are applied to each topic. This includes outlining the path to compliance with the National Building Code of Canada, in addition to provincial legislation (where applicable).

2025 Code Adoption Workshops
Adopting the 2025 editions of the National Building Code of Canada, the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings, the National Plumbing Code of Canada and the National Fire Code of Canada is proposed for January 1, 2027.
BTS will host workshops in Regina and Saskatoon to highlight the significant changes to the 2025 codes. The workshop will be of interest to building owners and managers, industry professionals, municipal officials, building officials, fire inspectors, designers and other code users.
