Key Updates from Building and Technical Standards

Summer 2025

Unsafe and Imminent Danger Situations

Unsafe and imminent (immediate) danger situations involving buildings, construction or demolition sites can occur at any time. Often, local authorities become aware of these situations from concerned citizens in the community or their appointed building official.

Through provincial legislation (The Construction Codes Act, The Building Code Regulations, and The Energy Code Regulations), appointed building officials can offer services to municipalities for the enforcement of both unsafe and imminent danger situations. This can include building official orders or actions that the municipality can proceed with to place the site in a safe condition. Further information can be found on page 16 of the Building Bylaw and Enforcement Guide.

Saskatchewan Construction Week

In recognition of Construction Week in Saskatchewan, Building and Technical Standards (BTS) extends sincere thanks to everyone in the construction industry for their commitment and professionalism. The delivery of safe, healthy and habitable buildings depends on the collaboration of building owners, local authorities, government, building officials, and skilled professionals. Each plays a vital role, whether through ensuring compliance, administering and enforcing standards, supporting legislation and policy, or contributing technical expertise. Through your combined efforts and under the guidance of The Construction Codes Act, Saskatchewan’s built environment continues to improve for the benefit of all. Thank you for all that you do.

Intent Statements for the 2020 National Model Codes

The Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC) has released the Intent Statements supplement to the 2020 National Model Codes. These documents explain the rationale behind requirements in the Codes and support code users in interpreting and applying acceptable solutions.

The Intent Statements also help code users understand what alternative solutions must meet. These statements are a resource for professionals who rely on the Codes for design, construction, enforcement, and compliance.

The Intent Statements are available to view or download for free by visiting the NRC’s Publications Archive.

More information about the code development process and the CBHCC can be found on the CBHCC’s website.
