The 2019 Association of Consulting Engineering Companies - Saskatchewan (ACEC-SK) Young Professional Award recipient is Alyson Stout, B.A.Sc.

In 2007, Alyson joined a survey crew operating around Saskatchewan as a survey assistant. As an employee of Raymac Surveys, Alyson worked for many of the potash mines in Rocanville, Saskatoon, Lanigan, and Moose Jaw providing seismic survey layout and/or benchmark leveling for clients. This was the job that first sparked her interest in construction and engineering.

With this new interest, Alyson went on to earn a diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from Saskatchewan Polytechnic in 2010 and continued her learning by earning her civil engineering degree from the University of British Columbia-Okanagan (UBCO) in 2013. Upon graduation with distinction Alyson moved back to Yorkton, where she worked with a local paving company, Federowich Construction, assisting the owners in developing a design and quality control department. After a year, she was promoted, and commenced the management and supervision of two staff. Although she enjoyed the work, in early 2016 she decided to embark on a new challenge and joined the consulting engineering team with McElhanney in Regina.

Starting as a Project Engineer with McElhanney, within three years Alyson proved that she was capable of delivering projects and managing staff and was ready to take on the demanding position of Project Manager. She is highly sought after across McElhanney to deliver complex, multi-disciplinary projects. Some recent projects that show her versatility include:

Alyson is well respected by her peers and clients for her hard work and dedication to their projects. She is currently working to achieve her Professional Engineer license and Project Management Professional designation simultaneously and is on track to achieve this goal by the end of 2019.

To contribute to her industry, Alyson has volunteered with various committees and industry associations. Alyson joined the Young Professionals group within ACEC-SK in the spring of 2016. By November 2016, Alyson volunteered to fill the vacant Treasurer’s position within the group and continued with that role until June 2019, as Alyson took on the position of Chair and Board Liaison for the ACEC-SK YP group. In addition to the YP Group, Alyson’s continued volunteering of her time to assist with setup and events hosted by ACEC-SK led her to becoming involved in a second ACEC Committee: Careers in Consulting. Through work on the Careers in Consulting committee, Alyson is part of a two-person sub-committee that started a mentorship program within the Saskatchewan consulting industry.

In the past five years, Alyson has taken many opportunities to speak to students and junior staff on the benefits and adventure of being a consulting engineer.
