City of Regina Aquifer Zone

The Regina Buildings Committee recently invited representatives of the City of Regina to engage in a discussion about the City’s Aquifer Protection Zone.  The City of Regina position is that the aquifer requires protection (City must provide a compliance report to Water Security Agency) and it is the engineers’ responsibility to ensure that it happens. Geotechnical and structural engineers present asked that the City review acceptable methods of protection as currently some systems are deemed acceptable while others are not.  It was ACEC-SK’s understanding that the City of Regina is reviewing the bylaw, and further investigation into the interpretation of the original recommendations will be undertaken. ACEC-SK has offered to provide input and expertise into developing a strategy to help protect the aquifer. ACEC-SK's position is that acceptable protection techniques be reviewed and agreed to by all parties in an effort to reduce inconsistencies and provide the protection required.

The semi-annual meeting with the City of Regina that includes a forecast of City projects is scheduled for some time in June, date still to be determined. The Aquifer Protection Zone will be on the meeting agenda.  The meeting is open to all consultants interested in work with the City.  Please contact the ACEC-SK office at 306-359-3338 if you wish to attend.
